Commencement Information

The 49th Annual Grossmont College Commencement Ceremony will be held on Thursday, June 3, 2010 at 5:30 p.m. in the Main Quad.

Students who meet the requirements for an Associate Degree and/or Certificate of Achievement from Grossmont College for the 2009-2010 academic year will be entitled to participate in this traditional and special ceremony.

The Student Affairs Office staff and the 2010 Commencement Committee consisting of many staff, faculty, and students, are excited to publicly honor our students who have reached this major goal at Grossmont College.

Students: If you were unable to meet the Admissions and Records (A&R) Office’s March 19 last day to apply for Spring 2010 Degree or Certificate, please contact their office to pursue the appeal process available to you. Call 619-644-7186 and ask for Evaluations.

Please place the ceremony scheduled on Thursday, June 3, 2010 at 5:30 p.m. in your personal calendars. In addition, we encourage you to inform your family and guests to join us as we celebrate this special occasion. We realize many of your family and close friends may come from many geographical locations in the United States and other countries so this information is intended to assist you.

Price information for caps, gowns, tassels, personalized invitations and commencement merchandise including related information can be found at the campus bookstore. Order and purchase your cap and gown!

Student Center Bathrooms Closed

Grossmont College has experienced a partial sewer line failure by the Student Center – Building 60. This failure affects the restrooms in the Student Center and Griffin Gate. These restrooms will be closed through the end of the Spring 2010 semester. Other restrooms that are available for use are located in Buildings 100, 200, 300, 500 and the ACE modular building.

We are only a short time away from the start of the Student Center renovation and expansin. We appreciate your cooperation and the tolerance of this closure, as we near the start of this much needed renovation project.

Need Financial Aid?

April is California Community Colleges Financial Aid Awareness Month. New research shows many students don’t believe they qualify for aid and therefore do not apply, leaving millions of dollars untapped. The Institute for College Access & Success recently published a report that said if community college students who are likely eligible for a Pell Grant applied and received federal aid, up to $500 million more would have flowed into California’s economy during 2009-10. These grants, worth up to $5,350 each, go straight into local economies where community college students pay for books, housing, gas, food, and other necessities in addition to fees. The I Can campaign team and their college financial aid partners are using April as an opportunity to increase awareness about Pell Grants and encourage everyone to apply. To promote the availability of aid during Financial Aid Awareness Month, events are taking place across the state, from financial aid workshops to community college fairs on high school and community college campuses. At these events, students can find out about the different types of financial aid available and receive free one-on-one assistance completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). To find the nearest financial aid event, current and prospective students can visit icanaffordcollege.com/events and type in their zip code.

“G-House” Showcase

Come out to the Quad today from 11a.m.- 2p.m. and see the festivities. The “G-House” Showcase is an event presenting the oppurtunities that are available, information that is unforgettable, entertainment that is presentable and education that is incredible. The Departments of Art, Music, Dance, Athletics will be showcasing their programs. There will be a fashion show, clubs and food. There will also be a candidates forum
at 11a.m. where you can meet your future student government leaders and hear their election platforms.

Rally For Education At State Capital

On Monday, March 25th, members of your student government (Aaron Williams, Christopher Enders, Christopher Foskett, Hilary Heath, Marc Venezuela and Stephen Dailing) attended a rally for education at the state capital. Shortly following the rally, your student leaders met with state legislators to discuss the issues students are seeing occur due to budget cuts and to discuss possible ways to fix these problems. It is that time of the year again. The Associated Students of Grossmont College are hosting elections to determine next years’ Executive Body and Student Trustee.

The application dates are fast approaching. If you are interested please come in to our office and speak with us, call us, email us or just submit an application! See the following important dates.

Applications are Due: Friday 26th, 4:00 pm in Student Affairs Office

Campaigning Week: April 5th thru 9th

Election Days: April 12th and 13th

This years’ election is hosted online. All students registered will receive notification in their email. Instructions on how to vote will also be posted.

State-Wide Day of Action To Protect Education In California

As many of you know, budget cuts to education in California have been large and frequent lately. Raise your voice, be an active member of a democracy and rally for your education.

Today, on campus, there will be “Teach-Ins” (in class dicussions on the impact of the cuts) and “Teach-Outs” (lectures on the impacts of educational cuts conducted by the Behavioral Science Dept. Faculty)

There will also be a rally in the Grossmont Quad from 12:30p.m.-1:30p.m. Come out and join us! Special guest speakers include; GCCCD Chancellor Cindy Miles, GCCCD Board Member Mary Rosinski and President of Grossmont College Sunny Cooke.

San Diego Community wide events going on today include the 3:00p.m. rally and march at Balboa Park [2004 Park Blvd.] and a 4:00p.m. protest at the Governer’s Office [135- Front St. Downtown San Diego]
